Skin Rashes to Sketchy Cologne: Amazon’s Counterfeit Problem Is Out Of Control

Published:

People are questioning the integrity of Amazon.

Amazon is reportedly one of the most valuable companies in the world behind Apple, according to CNBC. As one of the largest online retailers, you assume you can trust them. The truth is, you should actually be checking everything you buy from their website. Why? You could be purchasing an Amazon counterfeit item sold by a sketchy, third-party vendor.

In fact, this is exactly why designers are avoiding Amazon. It’s devaluing their brand. These third-party sellers are blatantly ripping off designer clothing lines, like Yeezy and Jordan. You’re left with a cheap imitation of expensive products.

The worst part? Amazon is doing little to nothing about it.

How is the Amazon counterfeit problem happening?

Amazon is protected under their Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) service. This means they’re the middleman between you and third-party sellers. Legally, Amazon can shift the blame towards both sellers and you for not reading into their FBA policies and regulations. It keeps Amazon from being held accountable. Thus, the Amazon counterfeit problem continues.

As Amazon grows, it gets easier to overlook the quality of what you’re buying. Especially if you hate browsing through hundreds of items, you’re going to choose one of the first items you see. Even more so, their 1-click button makes it so easy to carelessly buy their products. But it’s important to think before you 1-click buy.

The website is being used more and more every day to buy and sell goods. So it’s easy to assume that what you’re buying is legit and not a poor imitation of a product. The good news is, there are ways to avoid getting caught in the Amazon counterfeit trap. We researched some items you should think twice about before checking out.

  1. Baby & Toddler Toys

Many parents buy toys for their kids from Amazon. We get it. With 1-click ordering and 2-day delivery, it saves busy parents an extra trip to the toy store (R.I.P. Toys “R” US). However, most parents can’t even tell whether or not these toys on Amazon are counterfeit or not.

According to a survey by Red Points, 2 out of 3 parents already know that counterfeit toys are dangerous. However, only 39% of parents could tell which toys were fake and real. In other words, most people can’t tell if toys are made with hazardous materials or not. You’re putting your trust in an unknown seller that could be completely phony. Some of these sellers just want to make money, period.

So, how do these third-party vendors get away with it? Amazon doesn’t require them to test their toys for health and safety concerns. Thus, it becomes a health and safety issue for your child. This is why it’s crucial for parents to check the seller before buying discounted toys, even Prime members.

  1. Tech Products

When you’re buying a laptop or smartphone, you’re already preparing to invest a lot of money into one product. This is why people are becoming even more aware of counterfeit tech products. Most of these counterfeit electronics aren’t going to work as well the real deal. In short, they’re mediocre models with major flaws. Sometimes they even cause electrocutions. You’re better off just buying the real product.

One counterfeit item even caused a house fire in October 2016. A family in Tennessee purchased a counterfeit hoverboard from China, which ended up burning down their $1 million home. The family sued Amazon for the faulty item, but they fought back claiming that the third-party seller was the one responsible for the damage.

The sad reality is, knock-off electronics are very real and very dangerous. Next time you’re shopping for tech products, you might want to invest the extra money instead of risking your life and wallet. These counterfeit products may be cheaper, but they’re definitely not going to last as long or work as well as the original. Projectors, PCs, iPhone chargers: they’re all sold on Amazon. And most of them are counterfeit. Just because it has that Prime sticker does not mean it’s being sold directly by Amazon.

  1. Skin-care Products

Allure recently released an article outlining counterfeit beauty and skin-care products. It’s actually a massive, underground industry that most people are unaware of. What happens is, dermatologists will recommend skincare products to their patients. In order to save money, patients will go on websites like Amazon and search for the cheapest product. This way, they can avoid paying the full retail price in stores. Most of these counterfeit skincare stories are the same. People just want to save money so they go on Amazon to find cheaper products that will arrive in 1 or 2 days.

In the same article from Allure, they talked to NJ State Police Officers who specifically work on these cases to stop counterfeit beauty products. The counterfeit problem is so bad that beauty companies (like Estée Lauder) need to hire cops to find and stop these fake sellers. One private investigator admitted, “China. It’s always from China.”

The bottles and packaging all look the same, but the formula is completely different, even hazardous. Dermatologist, Patricia Farris, told Allure that these skin-care products “may be glue instead of retinol or rubbing alcohol rather than hyaluronic acid.” As a result, these counterfeit skin-care products can cause allergic reactions, burning sensations and facial swelling.

  1. Cologne

Many male users of Amazon have taken to Reddit to discuss counterfeit colognes that they bought on Amazon. They claim that the container, labels, and packaging look the same online. In reality, the actual product is defective. Either the bottles come scratched or the scent has a strong chemical smell.

One Reddit account commented, “I decided to try buying a fragrance from Amazon recently, directly from Amazon and not a 3rd party seller. I received what I’m pretty sure is a fake version of YSL L’Homme, as I’ve bought around 12 100ml bottles from Sephora and the YSL website before and the Amazon version has a few key differences.” The scary part about this complaint is that it wasn’t even a third-party seller. They bought their item directly through Amazon.

Just like skin-care products, Amazon counterfeit colognes can pose health risks, especially if the contents are unknown. Spraying and dousing yourself in unknown chemicals is not worth saving a couple dollars on cologne. It may be worth your while to check the cologne on the website or just buy it in retail stores.

  1. Vitamins & Mineral Supplements

Yes, that’s right. Not even multivitamins are safe. Unfortunately, the fake supplement industry has made its way to Amazon. And you should be weary. Third-party vendors can easily change the expiration date on packaging. What results from taking Amazon counterfeit vitamins? It can be anything from them simply not working to serious health concerns. Why waste your money on vitamins that aren’t going to work? Plus, what you may think are wholesome slimming products can actually be extremely harmful to your body.

In fact, Amazon even sells emergency contraception like the morning-after pill. Some alarming reports stated that people who purchased these pills from Amazon noticed that the expiration date on the packaging had been changed or rubbed off altogether.

Expired contraception can be anything from ineffective to extremely harmful for a woman’s reproductive system. Plus, ineffective Plan B? That’s a nightmare! You should be careful when buying medicine and vitamins of any kind for the sake of you and your woman. Maybe you should skip the 1-click buy for multivitamins and just go to your local drug store.
